What should generosity look like in the life of the believer? God's lavish generosity towards his people sets an example for what it truly means to be generous. Ephesians 5:1 calls us to “be imitators of God, as beloved children.” When we understand the gospel, we are set free to joyfully give to others the same way God has given to us. We no longer strive after the temporary treasure of man’s approval, nor are we consumed with the love of self. We give out of a compassionate, joyful heart that mirrors the heart of our generous Father.
